What is Radon?

Radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless radioactive gas. It is formed by decaying uranium, a natural material found in the soil, rock and groundwater.

What is the threat of Radon?

Radon is the second cause of lung cancer after smoking. In the United States, the EPA estimates that about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year are radon related. (EPA 402-R-03-003)

 

The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend that all homes be tested for the presence of radon.

Can you fix a Radon problem?

If you find that you have high levels, there are ways to fix a radon problem. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels. Radon mitigation systems vary and the right system depends on the design of your home and other factors.

 

Health department: New data shows all of IOWA at high risk for radon.

 

IOWA — All counties in IOWA are now considered “high-risk” areas for radon.

 

The EPA suggests homeowners test every two years because of changing conditions in and around your home. “There’s settling in the foundation, cracks in the foundation,” says Nate Nowicki of S.W.A.T. Environmental Colorado. “There’s a lot of ways that can create radon entry points that can now cause that home to test high with radon.”
